Selected presentations from the day include:

Professor Alison Ritter will launch research on Australian government spending on drugs. This work will outline new estimates of the proportion of expenditure on drug treatment, drug law enforcement, harm reduction and prevention and will be the first new national estimates provided since 2002/2003.

A panel, ‘The tail wagging the dog: A national opioid overdose prevention and response strategy’, will be held to discuss the development of a new National Opioid Overdose Prevention and Response Strategy. The panel is sponsored by Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Association ACT (ATODA). The panel will include Amanda Roxburgh, Professor Margaret Hamilton, Nicole Wiggins, Professor Simon Lenton, with facilitators Carrie Fowlie (ATODA) and David McDonald (Social Research and Evaluation).

Dr Caitlin Hughes and Nicholas Cowdery QC will speak about the issue of ‘Deemed supply in Australian drug trafficking laws’; describing the uniqueness of the deemed supply provisions (against international drug trafficking and other Australian serious crime provisions), policy implications and alternatives.
