The Event

The Kirby Institute is Australia’s premier infectious diseases research institute. Based in Sydney, the Kirby was initially funded by the Australian Government to conduct research into the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Australia, with the ultimate aim of reducing the burden of the HIV/AIDS epidemic for the affected community. This brief has expanded over more than 25 years to include viral hepatitis, blood-borne viruses, sexually transmissible infections and related illnesses.

A major focus in our sector is on treatment as prevention. For example, when a person with HIV is appropriately treated, his or her capacity to pass on infection is dramatically reduced. Treatment as prevention is the single most important strategy presently available to interrupt the chain of transmission, both in Australia and wherever infection is found.

The Inaugural Kirby Institute Symposium will be officially opened by the Hon. Jillian Skinner, NSW Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research. The day’s presentations will include a range of Kirby academics, as well as invited international and national guests, presenting a range of work on related treatment as prevention themes.
